Who is Vasco Da Gama?
Vasco Da Gama was a Portuguese explorer who found the trade route from Portugal to India. He basically used the discoveries of previous Portuguese great explorers, Henry the Navigator & Bartolomeu Dias. Henry found the western coast of Africa, and Bartolomeu found the Cape of Good Hope or South Africa. The discoveries of these two great explorers proved that the Atlantic Ocean and Indian ocean were connected ; this led to the idea of finding the trade route to India. His first voyage began when he was still an inexperienced explorer, but after his first journey he was known to be the hero of Portuguese who brought prosperity. Still, he was a hero for his country, but it wasn’t for the people he fought against, the Muslims. In order to get the trade ground that was once owned by the Muslims, he had no other chances but to kill ; he did one of the most fearsome mass slaughter in his second journey. He also killed the Indians in Calicut, India to strengthen the Portuguese power in India. The third voyage was his last journey because he later died in India due to overworking, then he was sent back and buried in Portugal. How it was done: This is my World history 10 final project. There were basically four steps to finish this project. There were Choosing, Researching, Planning, and Making. In the first step, students would have to choose an explorer that was in the exploration age. After choosing, students would have to research about the explorer’s back ground. This was the longest step from all other three, because we must research the date, things he did, things they trade, and the impacts. Students must complete an individual work log after every work day. The research must include all the voyages, and must be reliable. Students would basically have to read articles about the explorer, and summarise them day by day because the final product must be in a diary form. For the last two steps, we can combine them together because they were very related, but I did use one work day to plan. I planned by summarising all the details in keynote (Powerpoint) I wrote an event that happened in each period of time in each slides, so I can briefly see how the final product would look like. Then, I thought of the materials that I would need to make the product. After I bought the materials needed, I started to make the product. This part was very hard for me because the rubric says that the product must be creative and informative. So, I really had to use my creativity to make the product look interesting. I even bought the spices as examples for the goods that they traded to each other. ESLOs: The school’s ESLO that involved in this project were ‘Strategic learners’ and ‘Innovative thinkers’. I had to plan the research and how I would put the details together without making my product look boring. The product must not be full of writing, but also has to answer all the questions. I had to use creativity to follow the rubric, and it was very challenging.
